Working for the Weekend
Working for the Weekend
A look at the mental construction of our leisure time (via Andrew Sullivan).
QUOTE:
“Like sacred time, the weekend is comfortingly repetitive, but the conventionality of weekend free time, which must exist side by side with private pastimes and idiosyncratic hobbies, often appears to be restrictive. "What did you do on the weekend?" "The usual," we answer, mixing dismay with relief.”
It’s an interesting article.
I’m reminded of when I was in elementary school, and how I couldn’t enjoy my Sundays because of the daunting proposition of Monday’s return (coming like a jail on wheels, as the Clash song “48 Hours” goes). Later, when I was in college, I viewed Friday and Saturday evenings as nights when I had to go out and do something, or else I felt shame for letting those nights go to waste.
Only after aging a bit more do I find appreciation in being a homebody on those nights, or using them to spend time in the relaxed atmosphere of a friend’s home, without the need to visit a bar.
